Adventures Without Breaking the Bank: Tips for Event Enthusiasts

Participating in multiple races can get expensive. Last year, I participated in nine events: three biking events, two trail runs, a 5K, a duathlon, and two skate marathons, one of which was in Florida. Luckily, the three biking events were free because I was a Bike New York ambassador. One of the perks of being a Bike New York Roadie is free entry to their events. That left me paying out of pocket for five out of nine events, totaling $454.76 for registration fees. On top of that, I spent a few hundred dollars on a hotel, rental car, and food while traveling to Florida.

So, how do I manage it all without going into debt?

I keep a dedicated savings account just for hobbies and activities. When I sign up for an event, I use this fund to cover the costs. If the money isn’t there, I hold off until I can pay off my credit card right away, because hobbies shouldn’t lead to debt!

I also have a travel fund that I’m constantly contributing to because your girl loves to travel. Staying ready means I don’t have to get ready. I especially enjoy traveling for events, and over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to participate in events in Berlin, Minnesota, Florida, Georgia, and Maryland.

If I could, I would do all the events but I just can’t.

So, I have to make tough choices about which events to participate in, but budgeting and planning ahead makes it more manageable.

My Top Tips for Affording Races and Events

1. Volunteer

Many events offer free entry for volunteers. By helping out, you can save on registration fees while giving back to the community.

2. Become an Ambassador

Spread the word about events by becoming an ambassador. Many programs provide perks like free race entries in exchange for promoting the event.

3. Organization Discounts
If you’re a member of a cycling club, skate club, or similar organization, check if they offer discounted tickets to events. Many clubs partner with events to provide exclusive discounts to their members.

4. Fundraise
Many events offer opportunities to raise money for a cause in exchange for free or discounted entry. Not only can you save money, but you’ll also contribute to a meaningful cause.

5. Sign Up Early

Most events offer an early-bird discount if you register ahead of time. Signing up early can save you a good amount of money compared to last-minute registration fees.

6. Save Up

If there’s an event you’re eyeing, start saving now. Most races are annual, so you can plan ahead and set money aside specifically for that goal.

So far this year, I’ve only signed up for three events: one duathlon, one trail run, and one skate marathon back in Florida. While I may sign up for more, it depends on how my budget is looking.

No matter how many events I do this year or where they take me, one thing’s for sure: I’ll keep finding ways to enjoy the journey while staying within my means. Whether it’s volunteering, saving up, or planning ahead, there’s always a way to make it work.

What about you? Do you have any events you’re looking forward to this year, or tips for keeping costs down?
