Breaking Out of a Fitness Slump: How to Get Back on Track

We all hit that point. One day, you’re feeling strong, sticking to the plan, making progress and then, suddenly, everything feels… blah. The motivation isn’t there, the workouts feel like a chore, and skipping a session sounds way more appealing than lacing up your shoes.

I’ve been feeling like this lately. My alarm goes off at 5:30 AM, and instead of getting up, I lay there giving myself a full-on motivational speech about why I need to get my workout in before work. Most times, I win the argument and get up. But there have been a few mornings where I just say, “Damn this workout,” roll over, and try to squeeze in another half hour of sleep.

The thing is, fitness slumps are normal. But the longer you sit in one, the harder it is to break out of it. So when I start making too many excuses or just feel uninterested in my workouts, I know it’s time to shake things up.

Ways to Switch It Up

Set a Goal That Excites You

When there’s no goal, it’s easy to lose motivation. Give yourself something to aim for. I sign up for different events all the time, not just for the challenge, but because they make training fun.

  • Sign up for an event (race, ride, or something that pushes you).
  • Set a personal goal, like hitting a certain pace in training or finishing a 10K in under 45 minutes.
  • Create or join a fun challenge, like a 30-day consistency streak. (don’t want to break that)
  • Train with a friend or join a group run/ride.

Having a goal makes every workout feel like it’s leading somewhere.

Remember Your Why

When motivation is low, I go back to my why.

  • Why did I start?
  • What am I working toward?
  • What do I want to accomplish?

Sometimes, looking back at old training logs, race photos, or even just remembering how far you’ve come is enough to give you that push.

Take Small Steps

If getting back into the groove feels overwhelming, start small.

  • Commit to just 5 minutes of movement.
  • Lay out your gear the night before.
  • Do one workout this week, then build from there.

Momentum comes from action. Even a tiny step forward can help break the slump.

Slumps happen to everyone, but they don’t have to last forever. The key is recognizing when you’re in one and making small, intentional changes to shake yourself out of it.
